The SAT Sabbatical - A Holistic Program Where You Can...

Rest

As a holistic program and process, SAT facilitates the rest and re-creation of our participants. We anticipate that those who join us will return to ministry renewed and more deeply grounded in the Spirit — God's Spirit and their own.

The time at SAT — Fall and/or Winter/Spring — allows for the development of a holistic spirituality where the Spirit enriches participants in multiple ways. We believe that whole persons, well-rested, comfortable with their bodies and feelings, in touch with their spirituality and their personal calling, can be more energized and effective ministers.

Be Free

SAT prides itself on encouraging freedom and personal choice on the part of participants as they choose from among varied, timely, relevant topics in the program. There are no required readings, assignments, or exams while at SAT. We have built a leisurely schedule with no sessions on Fridays which means long weekends to take advantage of sightseeing and travel opportunities.

The SAT Sabbatical is a holistic, flexible program specifically designed for persons in mid-life and beyond seeking spiritual renewal and personal enrichment.

Play

Our Northern California location enriches the Sabbath experience. The mild climate and breath-taking scenery of the Berkeley/San Francisco Bay Area region enables SAT participants to take advantage of the countless recreational and cultural activities and to experience the wonderful ethnic diversity of California. Participants nurture their sense of wonder with optional, participant-planned trips to Carmel-by-the-Sea, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and other national parks.

Pray

Our holistic spirituality program includes spiritual direction, liturgies, integration groups, days of prayer, centering prayer, reflection mornings, and body praise. These are some of the opportunities offered that facilitate a person's receptivity to the work of the Spirit. Retreats are also offered each semester at retreat houses in the area. Within the context of such experiences and this time of "holy leisure," one realizes a shift in one's way of being, seeing and choosing to live.

Those who choose SAT for sabbatical know what it means to relax into God and to allow God to bring New Life!

Share New Ideas

SAT participants from across the globe come with a richness of lived experience which can be shared during input sessions, reflection groups, and informal settings.

The SAT Sabbatical is a holistic program which offers a unique opportunity for Christians in mid-life and beyond to be nurtured, refreshed, and renewed for the Church of tomorrow.

A question SAT seeks to address is, "When participants leave their sabbatical at SAT and arrive at new and challenging moments and places, will there be a deepened sense of what God hopes for them in their life and ministry and will there be the freedom and courage to live out the purpose to which they discern God is calling them?"

Who Chooses Sabbatical at SAT?
The Participants

THE PEOPLE who choose Sabbatical at SAT come from the United States and around the world. They are in mid-life and beyond; women and men; lay persons, religious, and priests all of whom bring a wealth of ministerial experience with them. They are teachers, nurses, volunteers, pastors, administrators, and those who minister in the missions. Often they come weary; sometimes confused; they are always hopeful and in search of a more holistic spirituality! They seek to enhance their old ministries or they look for new ways to serve.

SAT participants come to know themselves and one another more deeply and to appreciate the gifts each person brings. They relax; they explore new ideas; they play and worship together. They explore new insights about spirituality, theology and ministry. Renewed and rested, they leave our holistic program and return to their previous ministry or respond to new challenges. They are salt for the earth.
